UNDER 9’s START OF THE SEASON REVIEW

Callowbrook Swifts were Rubery’s first game and after we had the double over them last season this was a tough start to the season. Rubery had to make a few changes to this season’s team with the loss of Jordan, James and Joe to academies and George and Mathew to the Colts! We bought in Lewis from Rubery Colts and Owen from Headless Cross and had to switch the defenders to Midfield. We also bought in a new goalkeeper, Vikram from Maypole. So with all the rebuilding the first few games where going to be tough and with a new signing getting injured and going to miss 3 games it makes it even tougher.

With 8 players we had the challenge of Callowbrook we started off well took the lead then we went down 3-1 but fought back to 3-3 then there was only one winner but we tried that hard to get the winner we ran out of steam and callowbrook got two goals in the last few minutes and we went down 5-3.

Next up Solihull we took the lead again and looked strong then we had a mad 30 mins where all the hard work backfired and they scored 5 goals, we lost the 2nd game 5-1.

Next up was the Cup playing against Holy Name and with the loss of Owen we had more bad news, Morgan got injured so he was going to be out also for three weeks, we were down to 7 players. This was the worst performance I have ever witnessed we lost 5-0. We had a team meeting after and had a good chat with the boys and told them they had to decide if they wanted to play football or not!!!

The next game after the team meeting was Kingfisher, Top v Bottom. The boys responded with a great team effort, with a bit of luck they should have taken something out of this game with 2 late goals we lost 3-0. The promise of a night out bowling must of done the trick!!

Had we turned the corner the next game would tell, we had Holy Name in the Open Cup, 1-0 down I thought the worst but they showed so much desire and determination and we got one back then we took the lead, with 10 minutes to go we put the game out of reach we won our first game 3-1.

Next up Phoenix Rangers with the rain and wind the conditions were poor, we scored after 5 minutes then the referee disallowed the goal saying it never went over the line but the ball hit the back of the net and got stuck on the line - so we rolled up our sleeves and we were winning 2-1 (3-1) but the referee was playing for them we should have had a free kick but he waved play on and they scored, we eventually lost the game 3-2.

Up next Solihull after our 5-1 defeat how far had we come!! The game was very close, we had two chances to win the game in the last 5 minutes but a draw was a fair result.

Cup game against West Hagley was next, to reach the last 16, the game was heading for extra time then we nicked one with a few minutes to go to reach the last 16.

Now we have a tough trip to Binbrook but with the best team performance of the season we come away with a 4-2 win. The team are now gelling and starting to bring the training work to the matches.

I would like to thank all the players for their attitude over the last few weeks.

BIRMINGHAM CITY SHIELD 8-a-Side Tournament

Rubery Juniors under 8’s where invited to play in this seasons Birmingham City Shield at Wast Hills.

Teams from all the Midlands are invited to take part, to qualify for the competition your team must play in the top division in its respective league. We were put into a league of six with the top two going through to the quarter finals.

The first game of the day was against the all stars where we had a terrible start and lost 1-0, next up was Cottage Farm with a great 1-0 victory. Then our best result of the day was a 3-0 win over Pershore. BCFC under 7’s squad was our next game which ended goalless. So going into our last group game we needed a win to come to top of the group, the opposition were Weddington Thistle which we beat 2-0, to go through as group Winners.

In the quarters finals we where up against Tigers Utd the game went off at a great pace and we were 1-0 down with their first attack, so with 5 minutes to go Rubery made a sub and straight away we equalized, then in the final minute we struck to go 2-1 up and through to the Semi-Final. In the that game we had to play the Boys from Brazil which was a team made up of next seasons BCFC u9’s academy team and a few Headless cross players. The game most people said should have been the final. Rubery played some great football and came away with a 1-0 victory to reach the final.

In the final we where up against Maypole Juniors we put them on the back foot from the start and finally the pressure told and we went 1-0 up but with a lapse of concentration they equalized to take the game into extra time golden goal. The rules change now after every minute you take a player off until you are playing with 4v4 with golden goal still counting. Extra time was a tight game and with all the confusion of taking players off the game came to an end and penalties must decide the final. Both team had to decide on three penalty takers each Rubery player put there pens away brilliantly, and a great save from the Rubery goalie gave the lads a well earned victory as Rubery Juniors became the Winners of the Birmingham City Shield.
